Facility Description
This nine-story structure replaced the smaller hotel by Holabird & Root (1948) and William B Tabler (1968). Sheffield's design retains the austere, rectilinear massing, and window sizes of the former and remaining parts of the Statler complex. Sheffield has foregone the combination of brick and limestone of the rest of the building, preferring largely featureless cream limestone articulated by dark windows and three bands of pink granite (3rd and 9th stories). The mass is broken up by setting the upper five stories back on a platform of two stories. Notching the northwest corner likewise reduces bulk. The porte-cochere faces Ives Hall (the Statler Club entrance is off Peter Plaza, opposite the ground-floor entrance to Uris Hall). The bulk of the building towers over Wee Stinky Glen, without overpowering the space.
